Helen Halstead presented a fascinating talk on medicine in Jane Austen's England. She addressed an engrossed audience of approximately 30 people in the Burnside Library.

The talk described the many, varied and often bizarre medical remedies for various ailments. Helen undertook extensive research for the writing of A Private Performance which she drew upon with this session.

At the end of the presentation, there were numerous intelligent questions posed to Helen from the audience, which made for a lively an interesting morning.

The History of Lace Making

On Monday 19th November Joyce Campbell gave a talk and demonstration on the history of lace and lace making to a small but interested group. Joyce has over 40 years experience in making lace and was able to share this with the group.

Garden Party

On Saturday 24th November the Burnside library was transformed into a garden with flowers, shrubs, tables and umbrellas as we hosted the finale to our One Book One Burnside program. This provided the ideal setting for a High Tea to conclude the inaugural program and was very much in keeping with the theme of the book – A Private Performance.

The event was attended by approximately 60 guests including 12 members of the Victoriana Society whose attendance served to evoke the bygone era of Jane Austen’s England. The atmosphere was further enhanced by the background music of accomplished harpist Moira Lawry…We also utilised this historic occasion to launch a recently purchased, classics collection in the library.

The One Book program has been very successful with the book being borrowed by hundreds of library patrons and so we look forward to planning next year’s program. The next book has already been chosen and we anticipate a very different experience for readers next year.
